The problem with my username and the thought I had behind it

“rookieInTraining!!” For years, I’ve been using this username on my GitHub, Stack Overflow, and even this website. Initially, I had planned to keep it as “the-rookie-in-training,” but I dropped the “the” and removed the dashes to keep it short (how the mind works in your 20s).
What was sometimes confusing to people reading my username was a deep ideology to which I related—something that shaped my thinking when I started my career in the industry. “The-Rookie-In-Training” was supposed to capture a philosophy: no matter how well you excel in professional or personal areas of life, there will always be a new aspect that humbles you and makes you feel like a rookie. Only by learning from these experiences and restarting your training toward mastery can you grow. I kept this to signal curiosity and a willingness to learn in any phase of my life.
For years, I’ve embraced this ideology—it kept me humble despite the challenges I overcame, the changes I witnessed, and the achievements I earned. But an inherent problem grew over time. The term “rookie” was often mistaken for “self-defeating,” implying I’d never be capable or shouldn’t strive for excellence.
So today, I’ve finally found the answer to this self-defeating philosophy I had in my 20s. My username never meant I’d remain a rookie forever. My ideology was conveying that I’d always chase mastery, no matter what—that my expertise should remain in motion as new life experiences shape me. I’ll never let anything impact me so deeply that it shakes my core values.
My younger self had a dream—something he shaped while navigating a range of emotions and troubles (which I laugh at now). That dream, that pursuit of mastery, must not fade. The fire must continue to burn. I’m committed to making both my future self (30 years from now) and my younger self (from 15 years ago) proud.
So I’m declaring this to the universe, to my God, and to the supreme force within me: I will master my craft and work. I will cultivate excellence in my personal and professional life. I will ensure my learnings remain open-source. My path to mastery is perpetual—it is now—in motion!
